Question : POWER GENERATION



(a) whether power generation in the country received a boost during the year 1999-2000;

(b) if so, the details of percentage it was higher in comparison to previous year; and

(c) steps being taken to improve the position further?

(a) & (b): Yes, Sir. The all India growth in power generation during 1999-2000 over the previous year was 7.2% . The category wise growth was as under:

(c): In order to improve availability of power and generation capacity and make optimal use of the available power resources in the country, the following measures have been taken:-


(i) Expeditious implementation of capacity addition.

(ii) Promotion of measures for demand side management.

(iii) Renovation and Modernization(R&M) of old existing generating units.

(iv) Disbursement of loans by Power Finance Corporation for improving operation and maintenance of thermal power stations under accelerated generation programme.

(v) Promotion of inter-state and inter-regional power transfers and increasing export of power from surplus Eastern Region to neighbouring regions.

(vi) Coordinated operation of hydro, thermal, nuclear and gas turbine power stations in the regional power system.

(vii) Augmentation of transmission, transformation capacity in the power system and installation of shunt capacitors to improve the voltage.

(viii) Reduction of transmission and distribution losses.
