Question : HAZARDOUS WASTE



(a) whether a number of industries in the country are generating hazardous wastes including uranium/nuclear waste;

(b) if so, the quantum of such waste generated annually along with the present arrangement for scientific disposal of such waste, State-wise;

(c) whether the Government has recently reviewed/proposes to review the present arrangement; and

(d) if so, the details thereof and the steps taken so far in this regard?

(a) & (b) As per the information provided by Central Pollution Control Board, there are about 41,523 number of hazardous waste generating industries in India generating about 7.90 million tonnes of hazardous waste per annum. These wastes can be categorized into three components viz. recyclable (3.98 MTA), land fillable (3.32 MTA) and incinerable (0.60 MTA). Hazardous wastes are regulated under the Hazardous Wastes (Management, Handling and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2008. Radioactive wastes are exempted from the provision of these Rules. Rules have the provision for setting up of Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs) for treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous wastes in an environmentally sound and techno-economical viable manner.

(c)&(d) There is no proposal to review the present arrangement.
