Question : FUNDS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONAL WATERWAYS



(a) the number of National Waterways developed during the Ninth Plan period;

(b) the amount spent during each year of the Ninth Plan on the development of National Waterways;

(c) whether Central Assistance is being extended to state Governments for developing inland waterways;

(d) if so, the States which have been provided funds from the Centre during Ninth Plan to develop inland waterways; and

(e) the specific inland waterways developed in those States during that plan period.

(a) 3 National Waterways have been declared so far namely the Ganga from Haldia to Allahabad, the Brahmaputra from Dhubri to Sadiya and the West Coast Canal from Kottapuram to Kollam along with Udyogmandal and Champakara canals.

(b) For development of three National Waterways, amounts spent during each year of Ninth plan are given below:-

1997-98	- Rs 17.81 Cr.	1998-99	- Rs.27.45 Cr.	1999-00	- Rs. 24.03 Cr.	2000-01	- Rs. 23.19 Cr	2001-02	- Rs 26.95 Cr.



(c) Yes, Sir.

(d) Tamil Nadu, Kerala, U.P. West Bengal and Goa were provided with funds by the Central Government for development of inland state waterways.

(e) Details of schemes for which assistance to States has been provided for development of Inland Water Transport under Centrally Sponsored Schemes is at Annexure.
