Question : PACKAGED MID DAY MEAL SCHEME



(a) whether Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) is developing a package design for distribution of mid-day meals to school children in various States in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the IIP is also making research in package of food items suitable for Indian climatic conditions;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) & (b): The Supreme Court directions mandate the serving of hot cooked meals only, under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme. The Government is therefore not contemplating serving packaged meals.

(c)to(e): Yes, Sir. The Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) has been conducting research on the packaging of food items both for domestic and for export markets for Processed foods; Fresh fruits and vegetables; Spices; Cashew kernels; Meat and Meat products; Tea; Coconut products; Edible oil; Indian sweets; and snack foods.
