STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (e) OF UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 5498 BY SHRI BHAIRON PRASAD MISHRA AND SHRI NANA PATOLE TO BE ANSWERED IN LOK SABHA ON 27.04.2015 REGARDING REVENUE LOSSES IN RAILWAYS
(a) and (b): Yes, Madam. The number of cases of theft of scrap and revenue loss incurred to the railways during the last three year zone-wise over Indian Railways is Appended. However, no revenue loss has been incurred by the Railways due to auctioning of good quality of iron as scrap.
(c): No, Madam.
(d): Does not arise.
(e): The following measures are being taken to prevent theft of scrap:
1. Railway Protection Force (RPF) are deployed at vulnerable spots to prevent theft of scrap material.
2. Joint checking of wagon fittings is done by Carriage and Wagon Department and RPF.
3. Entry and Exit at workshops/ Loco sheds etc. is regulated by RPF and materials coming in and going out of such sheds and workshop are properly checked.
4. Surprise checks are conducted frequently by Crime Wing of RPF and Vigilance department.
5. Regular coordination is maintained with Government Railway Police and Local Police for exchange of crime intelligence.
6. For transparency in the auction of scrap, Railways have completely switched over to e-auction.
