Question : Indigenous Food Processing Technologies

(a) whether any institutional mechanism is in place to promote education/training in food technology and improve manpower in food processing industry for the development of indigenous technologies for food processing in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) if not, whether the Government has any plans to come up with a proposal to create an institutional mechanism to promote food technology in the food processing sector, if so, the details thereof?

(a): Yes, Sir.

(b): There are two Institutes, namely National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship & Management (NIFTEM) at Kundli (Sonepat), Haryana; and Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT) at Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, functioning under the administrative control of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries. They are engaged in human resource development and capacity building in food processing and allied streams, including development of indigenous technologies through their academic, research, skill training, and outreach programmes. Additionally, advancement of food processing industries including research is promoted by the Ministry through its scheme “Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY)”. Skill development is also provided under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikash Yojana (PMKVY).
