(a)&(b): As on 1.1.2001 as against the total authorised strength of 5159 in the 24 States/Joint Cadres in the Indian Administrative Service, 5088 officers were in position. The details are indicated in the statement annexed.
(c): The Rules provide for a quinquennial cadre review and in such reviews the functional requirement of the States is taken into consideration. In the promotion posts in some cadres the deficit is mainly on account of ongoing litigations. However, considering the deficit noticed in the direct recruitment posts in the States of Manipur-Tripura, Nagaland and Sikkim, a decision has been taken to step up the direct recruitment in these States from the Civil Services Examination 2000& 2001.
