Question : WATER DISPUTES



(a) the details of States which have water sharing disputes, as on date;

(b) whether the Government have taken any steps to resolve such disputes;

(c) if so, the details thereof and the results achieved so far in this regard; and

(d) the present status of the each dispute?

(a) The details of the inter-state water sharing disputes referred to the Union Government under Inter-State Water Disputes Act 1956 are as follows:-

(b) to (d) In accordance with the said Act, the Central Government is required to refer a dispute to a Tribunal after it is satisfied that the dispute cannot be settled by negotiations. Accordingly, the water disputes related to Cauvery and Krishna were referred to the Tribunals for adjudication in 1990 and 2004 respectively. The water dispute related to Ravi & Beas was referred to the Ravi & Beas Waters Tribunal in 1986 under Section 14 of the said Act. In respect of Madei/Mandovi water dispute, the Minister (WR) convened an inter-state meeting during December, 2002, during which it was decided that Government of Goa and Central Water Commission would make joint efforts to reconcile the discrepancies in the data and in yield figure.
