Question : CRIME AGAINST WOMEN and CHILDREN



(a) whether the Human Rights Law Network has stressed the need for a separate law to deal with sexual crime against women and children;

(b) if so, whether any State-wise study about such women and child victims of sexual abuse has been made; and

(c) if so, the percentage of women and children who have experienced the trauma of sex-abuse?

STATEMENT REFFERED TO IN REPLY TO THE LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO.452 FOR 22.04.2003 REGARDING CRIME AGAINST WOMEN & CHILDREN.

(a): Government has not received any recommendation for a separate law to deal with sexual crime against women and children.

(b): No such State-wise study has been conducted by the Government.

(c): As per information available, a total of 60460 cases, out of which 16496 cases of rape, 32940 cases of molestation and 11024 cases of sexual harassment were reported in 2000. This is 42.8 per cent as against a total of 1,41,373 crimes committed against women.

Out of the rape cases, in 7754 cases, the victims were upto the age of 18 years, which is 47 per cent of the total rape victims.
