Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR PERSONNEL, PUBLIC GRIEVANCES & PENSIONS AND PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE (Dr. JITENDRA SINGH) :

a)to(c) The details of nuclear power projects under construction/commissioning are given in the annexure.

(d) Safety in nuclear power plants is given utmost importance at all stages from siting, design, construction, commissioning, and operation to decommissioning. The designs of Nuclear power plants take into account the technical parameters related to earthquake, tsunami, storm surges, floods etc. at the respective site. Provisions and features provided to withstand extreme events like earthquake, tsunami, flood etc., include earthquake resistance design, provision of seismic switches to shutdown the reactor on sensing earthquake, location of safety buildings above maximum flood level, flood protection measures etc.

The safety standards followed in Fast Breeder reactors are at par with the international standards. The defense-in-depth approach has been adopted for safety of the reactor. Many inherent and engineered safety features ensure adequate safety of the reactor during unlikely events.
