MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF SHIPPING (SHRI DILIPKUMAR MANSUKHLAL GANDHI)
(a) Construction of container terminals in major ports is part of an ongoing process of development of these ports to meet the demands of maritime trade, particularly, in the context of increasing trend towards containerization of cargo. At present, no new container terminal is under construction in any of the 12 major ports which are under the administrative control of the Government of India. However, Jawaharlal Nehru Port at Navi Mumbai and Mumbai Port at Mumbai in Maharashtra, Cochin Port in Kerala, Kandla Port in Gujarat, Mormugao Port in Goa and Tuticorin Port in Tamil Nadu have plans to create additional capacities for container handling on Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis.
Ports other than major ports are under the administrative control of the respective State Governments where they are located.
(b) Since the process involves selection of private operators through open competitive bidding, it would not be possible to indicate the timeframes for completion of the projects for creation of these additional capacities with certainty.
