Question : Pollution by Coca Cola Plants

(a) whether the Government is aware that one of the Coca Cola plants in Hapur throws out average of 1900 KLD of industrial waste water and 100 KLD sewage and is still functioning despite having no consent to operate for a year;
(b) if so, the steps taken to ensure that there is no further damage to the water resources nearby;
(c) whether any survey has been conducted by the Government to gauge the level of contamination of water bodies nearby due to the plant; and
(d) if so, the details and findings thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a)&(b) The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) has reported that M/s Hindustan Coca-cola Beverage Pvt. Ltd., Hapur is engaged in production of soft drinks and packaged drinking water. The effluent generated during manufacturing process is treated in the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) of capacity 1900 KLD. The domestic sewage generated in the industry is treated in two Sewage Treatment Plants (40 KLD & 60KLD). The effluent and sewage generated in the industry are treated to the specified norms and discharged. The industry has been granted consent under Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 by the UPPCB which was valid upto 31.12.2015. The unit has applied for renewal of the Consent to the UP Pollution Control Board.

(c)&(d) Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board further reported that it has analyzed samples of groundwater from different locations around the factory which have been found within prescribed norms.
