Question : Suicide by Students

(a) whether as per the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) there is an increase of student
suicide including SC/ST/OBC students in the country in recent years;
(b) if so, the details during the last three years, State-wise including Karur district of Tamil
Nadu;
(c) whether the Government has prepared any road map to tackle this problem; and
(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b): Category wise data regarding number of suicides by students in the country is not
maintained by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB). The state-wise details of suicides by
students from the year 2016 to 2018 is at Annexure. District-wise information is not maintained
separately by NCRB.
(c) & (d): Under Samagra Shiksha, there is a provision for supporting States and UTs on
interventions related to Guidance and Counselling in schools. Funds are provided to the States/UTs to
encourage teachers to function as the first level counsellors in schools. Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti
(NVS) has adopted best practices for emotional, psychological and physical well being of the students.
It has appointed Counsellors in the JNV schools for emotional and physical wellbeing of the children.
In line with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), 2005, National Council of
Educational Research And Training (NCERT) has developed textbooks that cover the aspects of
stress, anxiety and other related problems in schools.
