Question : Educational Facilities to Children of Labourers

(a)whether the Government has formulated/proposes to formulate any policy for providing educational facilities to children of labourers/workers in West Bengal;
(b)if so, the details of the facilities provided during the last three years and the current year, year-wise; and
(c)the details of the other welfare measures being undertaken by the Government for the children of labourers/workers in the country including West Bengal?

(a) to (c): Government has already enacted the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 on 4 August 2009, the Act came into force on 1st April, 2010. This Act provides free and compulsory elementary education for every child upto 8th standard. This Act applies to all including children of labourers/workers in West Bengal. Specific educational schemes implemented by Ministry of Labour and Employment are for children of Beedi, Iron Ore Manganese and Chrome, Limestone and Dolomite, CINE and MICA workers, whereby financial support is provided for education of children of these workers starting from class I to professional and degree courses. The Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana implemented by Department of Financial Services supports education for 9th to 12th standard @ Rs.1,200/- per child per annum for two children of the insured person.
