Question : SETTING UP OF NEW IITS IIITS AND IIMS



(a) whether the Government has any plan to establish new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) in the country particularly in tribal and backward States;

(b) if so, the details of the places where these Institutes are likely to be established;

(c) the details of proposals received from the States including Kerala and Tamil Nadu for setting up of above Institutes in their States, State-wise; and

(d) the action taken /proposed to be taken by the Government thereon and the time by which these Institutes are likely to be established?

(a) Yes, Madam. The government has announced establishment of IITs in 5 States, IIMs in 6 States and IIIT in one state this year.

(b) These are announced for-

States of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Goa, Jammu and Chhattisgarh for 5 new IITs; States of Bihar, Odisha , Himachal Pradesh ,Maharashtra ,Andhra Pradesh & Punjab for 6 new IIMs and State of Andhra Pradesh for one new IIIT.

(c) Government of India sets up Site Selection Committees with representatives of State Governments for these institutions. All proposals of State Governments are placed before these committees.

(d) Based on proposals and field visits, the Site Selection Committee has to make recommendations for approval of Central Government.
