(a) whether the 40 per cent people still purchase non-iodised salt;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the steps taken by the Government to bring down the cost of the iodised salt?

(a)&(b) No, Sir. As per National Family Health Survey NFHS II-1998-99, about 70% population of the country is consuming adequately Iodated salt. The Government has already issued restrictions on the sale of non-iodised salt for direct human consumption under the PFA Act, 1954 w.e.f. 17th May 2006 in the entire country. However non-iodised salt may continue to be sold for purpose of iodisation, iron fortification, animal use, preservation, manufacturing medicines and industrial use under proper label declaration.The production of Iodated salt in the country during 2006-2007 was about 52 lakh MT against the requirement of 50 lakh MT for the entire population.

(c) In order to bring down the cost of Iodated salt, seven States have included Iodated salt under the Public Distribution System.
