Question : INDIA AS TELEPORT HUB



(a) whether the Government proposes to make India a teleport hub enabling the country to become an Uplinking/ downlinking centre like Hongkong and Singapore;

(b) if so, the details and the purpose thereof;

(c) whether the Government also proposes to hold consultations with stakeholders to discuss the modalities, challenges and roadmap for making India a teleport hub;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the time by which the said proposal is likely to be cleared?

(a) to (e): The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its recommendations on “Policy Issues relating to Uplinking/Downlinking of Television Channels in India” dated 22nd July 2010 had, inter-alia, recommended that India should be developed as a teleport hub in view of its technical capabilities and geographical location. The recommendations of TRAI are under the consideration of the Ministry.
