Question : Cyclone Vayu

(a) the present status of Cyclone Vayu;

(b) the details of the States affected by the cyclone so far in the country including Gujarat;

(c) the details of the loss/damage suffered due to this cyclone in the country, State/UT-wise;

(d) the steps taken/being taken by the Government to compensate for the loss/ damage caused by Cyclone Vayu; and

(e) the steps taken by the Government to tackle this cyclone?

(a) to (d): Cyclone “Vayu’’ had weakened from “Very Severe” Cyclonic storm to a “Well-marked low pressure area” on 18th June, 2019 when it crossed Kutch/north Gujarat coast. No State/UT was affected from Cyclone “Vayu’’. As intimated by the State Government of Gujarat and Daman & Diu administration, there was no loss of life and property, hence, there was no need for disbursement of any relief amount.
(e) Following steps were taken by Central Government to tackle Cyclone “Vayu’’:
i. Regular forecast bulletins were issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on the Cyclone (Vayu) to all concerned.

ii. 52 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) (Gujarat - 47 teams and Diu - 05 teams) were deployed as proactive deployment.
iii. On 11.06.2019, Union Home Minister reviewed the preparedness of State and Central Ministries/Agencies concerned to deal with the situation arising out of Cyclone ‘VAYU’.
iv. Cabinet Secretary chaired the meeting of National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) on 11.06.2019 and reviewed the preparedness of State and Central Agencies concerned.
v. Detailed advisories were issued to the State of Gujarat and UT of Daman & Diu requesting them to take all precautionary measures with a view to ensure that no human life is lost, damage to vital infrastructure is minimized and to ensure early recovery of all essential services post-cyclone landfall.
vi. Home Secretary took a review meeting on 12.06.2019 of States and Central Ministries/agencies concerned.
vii. Situation was monitored 24*7 at the highest level.
viii. Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force were put on high alert.
ix. NDRF teams assisted Gujarat and Diu administration in evacuation of people from vulnerable locations to safer places.
