Question : New Department of International Law



(a) whether the Government proposes to set up a new Department of International Law in the country;

(b) if so, the details and the objectives thereof along with the time by which the said Department is likely to become operational; and

(c) the measures taken/being taken by the Government to streamline the mechanism of dealing with all the issues relating to international treaties and cooperation?

(a), (b) & (c): To streamline the existing mechanism of handling all issues relating to international treaties and cooperation, the Department –related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice in its 81st Report has, inter-alia, recommended for creation of Department of International Law. The Report of the Standing Committee is under examination in consultation with all the Ministries/Departments to reach a reasonable conclusion. However, at present no such proposal to set-up Department of International Law is under consideration.
