Question : CONTAMINATION IN FOOD AND FOOD PRODUCTS



(a) whether use of pesticides has threatened food safety;

(b) if so, whether there is no proper system for regular monitoring of contaminants in food and food products;

(c) if so, whether this issue was also discussed in the workshop on strengthening food safety and quality system organized by CII, Food and Agriculture Organisation (UN) and Ministry of Health;

(d) if so, the outcome thereof; and

(e) the steps being taken by the Government in this direction?

(a) & (b): Use of pesticides do not threatened food safety if used as per directions approved by Registration Committee constituted under the Insecticides Act, 1968.

(c) to (e): A workshop on strengthening food safety and quality systems in India through the work of the National Codex Committee was organized from 4-6 February 2002 in New Delhi by CII, Ministry of Health and FAO wherein a paper on criteria for setting of Residual level for Pesticides was also presented. The States/UTs who are responsible for implementation of PFA Act, 1954 and PFA Rules, 1955 have been requested from time to time to keep check on the quality of food products in the country.
