(a) & (b) The total municipal solid waste generated in the Capital is approximately 6000 tons per day out of which about 35 tons of waste is from the hospitals and 98 tons from slaughter houses, wholesale fish and scrap market. In addition to this, the thermal power plants generate about 5600 tons of waste per day.
(c), (d) & (e) The Central and State Governments have taken the following steps to deal with the problem of solid wastes:
(i) The Municipal Solid Wastes (Management & Handling) Rules, 2000 have been
been notified under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. These rules provide for collection, segregation, storage, transportation, treatment, disposal and recycling of municipal solid wastes. In addition to this, steps have been taken to set up waste processing and disposal facilities including the improvement of existing landfill sites. An implementation schedule has been drawn for the same. Local authorities namely the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the New Delhi Municipal Council are required to comply with these rules.
(ii) The Biomedical Wastes (Management & Handling) Rules, 1998 notified under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 provide for collection, segregation, storage, transportation, treatment and disposal of biomedical wastes. The major hospitals in Delhi have taken steps to ensure compliance with these rules.
(iii) A notification on utilization of flyash has been issued on 4th September, 1999. The fly ash generated by the power plants in Delhi is inter-alia utilized for manufacture of fly ash bricks.
(iv) The Industry Department in Delhi alongwith other agencies have identified industrial areas for ensuring proper management of industrial waste generated in Delhi.
