Question : Children excluded from NRC

(a) whether the Government has decided to stop sending of the children who have been excluded from the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam despite their parents finding a place in the list;

(b) if so, whether the Government can explain why those children were excluded in the final list inspite of their parents included therein;

(c) whether it is a fact that there are many complaints in Assam and the matter also came before the Supreme Court; and

(d) if so, the details thereof and the action proposed to be taken on this matter by the Government?

(a) to (d): Learned Attorney General for India stated on 06.01.2020 before the Hon’ble Supreme Court that the children of parents included in National Register of Citizens (NRC), Assam will not be separated from their parents and sent to detention centre in Assam pending decision of the Application. The approved Standard Operating Procedures for disposal of claims and objections had specific provision for such children, who were left out from draft




NRC while their parents had been included. While hearing various applications related to the matter on 06.01.2020, the Hon’ble Supreme Court has directed Union of India to file a reply. Next date of hearing is not fixed.
