(a) Government has launched Namami Gange Programme for cleaning river Ganga. The Programme is under implementation covering short term, medium term and long term activities.
Under short term action plan, certain interventions under the heading of “Entry Level Activities” are covered which includes development of ghats, crematoria and river surface cleaning activities.
Under Medium term action plan, existing Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) are upgraded and new STPs and ETPs are established with an aim to stop untreated sewage and industrial waste falling in the river. Besides, rural sanitation, has been taken up in the villages on the banks of river Ganga.
The long term action plan involves restoration of wholesomeness of river Ganga, maintaining the ecological and geological integrity of the river.
(b) Government of India has released Rs. 4321.05 crore till 28.02.2017 to National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) out of which NMCG has spent Rs. 1984.49 crore.
(c) It is resolved that no untreated municipal sewage or industrial effluent will be discharged into River Ganga by the year 2020.
(d) The sanctioned pollution abatement works for River Ganga in Kanpur is scheduled to be completed by July 2020.The sanctioned ghat/crematoria in Kanpur region of Uttar Pradesh are to be completed by March 2018.
