(a) The licensing authority for setting up of mineral water/ soft drink plants is Bureau of
Indian Standards (BIS) and not Central Ground Water Board (CGWB). BIS refers proposals for
setting up of new mineral water and soft drink plants / extension of existing units falling in
âOver-exploitedâ, âCriticalâ or âSemi-criticalâ areas to Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA)
for obtaining âNo Objection Certificateâ for withdrawal of ground water. Since 1999, the
Authority has issued NOC to 98 mineral water/ soft drink units, details of which are given in
Annexure.
(b) Data on quantum of ground water withdrawal by these plants on an annual basis is not
maintained by CGWA.
