Question : CEASE FIRE IN NORTH-EAST



(a) the number of peace-talk round held between NSCN(IM) and the Union Government;

(b) the present status thereof;

(c) whether it is a fact that NSCN(K) faction and the Union Government have agreed to declare cease-fire;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the time by which the peace-talks are likely to be resumed between the NSCN(K) and the Union Government?

(a) to (e): A Statement is laid on the Table of the House.

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 336 BY SHRI K.A. SANGTAM FOR REPLY ON DECEMBER 12, 2000.

(a) & (b): The Cease fire between Government of India and the NSCN(I/M) has been further extended for a period of one year with effect from August 1, 2000. The Government of India and the NSCN(I/M) have decided to move forward with the peace process to bring about a lasting political solution to the Naga issue.

Talks with NSCN(I/M) are continuing and it would not be in public interest to reveal the details at this stage.

(c) to (e): In a Press Release issued on April 8, 2000, the NSCN(K) offered to have formal Cease Fire with the Government of India. State Government of Nagaland also suggested that a Cease Fire agreement should be signed with the NSCN(K). No such agreement has, however, been entered into between the Government of India and the NSCN(K) so far.
