Question : LITERACY DRIVE IN ORISSA AND W. B.



(a) whether the desired target has not been achieved under the literacy drive in Orissa and West Bengal;

(b) If so, the details in this regard;

(c) whether the said situation has arisen due to lack of proper co-ordination between his department and concerned university of the State Government; and

(d) if so, the facts thereof?

(a) & (b) As per census 2001 (provisional), the literacy rate of Orissa has increased from 49.09 percent in 1991 to 63.61 percent in 2001. It has increased in West Bengal from 57.70 percent in 1991 to 69.22 percent in 2001. The National Literacy Mission seeks to achieve full literacy in the country, i.e., a sustainable threshold level of 75% by 2005.

(c) & (d) The literacy campaigns are not implemented by the universities of the State Government but by the Zilla Saksharata Samitis, which are registered societies under the Chairmanship of the District Collector.
