Question : Compensation for Farmer Suicide

(a) whether one lakh rupees is given to the families of those farmers who die or commit suicide due to drought whereas atleast five lakh rupees is given as compensation to those who die from alcohol consumption;

(b) if so, the reason for the discrimination which reflects in giving lesser compensation to the farmers;

(c) whether the Government is proposing to give atleast five lakh rupees to the families of those farmers who have died or committed suicide due to drought; and

(d) if not, the reasons therefor and the reaction of the Government thereto?

(a) & (b): Ex-Gratia payment is provided by the respective state Governments to families of farmers who commit suicide as well as those who die due to alcohol consumption.

(c) & (d): There is no such proposal under consideration of the Government of India.
