Question : ENERGY FROM GARBAGE



(a) the number of energy projects set up with the assistance of Union Government for generating energy from garbage and wind in Tamil Nadu as on date;

(b) the total quantum of energy being generated through these projects;

(c) the details of steps being taken for municipal solid wastes as an alternative source of renewable energy; and

(d) whether the Government Undertakings and the private multinational Companies have taken ini- tiatives to generate powers, and if so, the details thereof?

(a): Wind power projects with a capacity of 7411 MW have been installed in the State of Tamil Nadu up to February 28, 2015. However, no project for energy recovery from garbage has so far been set up in the State.

(b): About 11 billion units of electricity were generated from wind power projects during the year 2013-14.

(c): Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is implementing a Programme on energy recovery from Urban, Industrial and Agricultural Wastes/ Residues. The Programme provides for financial and fiscal incentives, among others, for setting up of five projects on energy from municipal solid waste/garbage. Ministry of Urban Development has launched “Swachh Bharat Mission” on 2nd October, 2014. The Mission, among other measures, includes Solid Waste Management for which there is a pro- vision for 20% of project cost as Viability Gap Funding for enabling State Governments or Urban Local Bodies to opt for any feasible waste pro- cessing technology.

(d): Projects for power generation from garbage are being set up mainly by private companies, some of whom are using imported equipment and/ or technologies.
