Question : Protection from Nuclear Materials


(a) the details of the guidelines issued by the Government for physical protection from nuclear materials and facilities;

(b) whether the cases of violation of the said guidelines have come to the notice of the Government during each of the last three years and the current year;

(c) if so, the details thereof, State-wise and the reasons therefor along with the action taken by the Government in such cases so far;

(d) whether the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has suggested improvements to Indian Atomic Energy Regulatory Board towards strengthening the atomic regulatory framework in India;

(e) if so, the details of such improvements along with the compliance of such suggestions by the Government so far; and

(f) the other steps taken by the Government in this direction?

THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR PERSONNEL, PUBLIC GRIEVANCES & PENSIONS AND PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE (Dr. JITENDRA SINGH):

(a) Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has issued guidance documents regarding detailed requirements on physical protection of nuclear materials and facilities to be complied by all nuclear facilities in the country. These aspects are reviewed by AERB before giving clearance for various stages of nuclear facilities and have a well established process for monitoring compliance to these requirements through multi-tier reviews and periodic regulatory inspections.
