Question : Rice Procurement by FCI

(a) the status of procurement of rice by Food Corporation of India (FCI) during the financial year 2022- 2023 in Assam;

(b) whether there is any plan to increase the procurement from Assam;

(c) if so, the details of the quantity likely to be increased; and

(d) if not, the reasons therefor?

(a) to (d): A statement is laid on the Table of the House.

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (d) OF THE STARRED QUESTION NO.294 FOR ANSWER ON 23.03.2022 IN THE LOK SABHA.


(a): Procurement in a State depends not only upon production but also upon other multiple factors like marketable surplus, Minimum Support Price (MSP), prevailing market rate, demand & supply situation and participation of private traders etc.

During Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2021-22, the period of paddy procurement for kharif crop in Assam is from 1stDecember, 2021 to 30thJune, 2022 and for rabi crop is from 1st July, 2022 to 30th September, 2022. Upto14.03.2022, 0.95 LMT of paddy has been procured during KMS 2021-22.

(b) to (d): Government of India/Food Corporation of India, in association with State Government, makes effort to increase the procurement of paddy in the state of Assam. During KMS 2020-21, 2.11 LMT paddy was procured. However, for KMS 2021-22, an estimate of 10 LMT paddy procurement has been fixed in respect of Assam which is higher than previous year procurement of 2.11 LMT paddy.
