Question : Ban on Wet Markets

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) the number of wet markets operating in the country, State/UT wise;

(b) whether the Government has taken cogniance of the unsafe and disease-prone nature of wet markets if so, the plan formulated to tackle the same;

(c) whether the Government has any plan to regulate or ban wet markets in the country and if so, the details thereof; and

(d) whether the Government has any plans to identify spots in the country which can induce zoonotic diseases related to consumption of animal meat and if so, the details thereof?

(a) Public health and hospitals being a State subject, no such data is maintained centrally.

(b) To (d) Surveillance for early detection & response is coordinated through One Health approach on priority zoonotic diseases by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in coordination with Animal Husbandry Department.
Under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, which is being implemented in 36 states/UTs in the country, food borne outbreaks including non-zoonotic and zoonotic diseases outbreaks, for example Anthrax, Brucellosis, are being reported.
