Question : CENSUS FOR SSI



(a) whether the Government propose to conduct a large scale sample survey of registered SSI units in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the details of organisations which are likely to be involved in such survey;

(d) whether the Government have set up any committee in this regard;

(e) if so, the details of composition thereof; and

(f) the extent to which the survey is likely to be helpful for the Government in formulating policies for the development of the sector?

THE MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) IN THE MINISTRY OF SMALL SCALE INDUSTRIES AND AGRO AND RURAL INDUSTRIES (SMT. VASUNDHARA RAJE)

(a) & (b): Yes, Sir. Government proposes to conduct a Census of SSI units registered upto March, 2001.

(c): The Office of the Development Commissioner (Small Scale Industries) in association with States/UT Directorate of Industries shall be responsible for the conduct of Census. Co-operation of Industry Associations will also be obtained for the purpose.

(d) & (e): Yes, Sir. A Steering Committee has been set up in the Ministry of Small Scale Industries and Agro and Rural Industries with 18 other members covering representatives of concerned Central Ministries/Departments, four State Governments, RBI, SIDBI, Industry Associations etc.

(f): The Census will make available information on production, employment, sales, closure, sickness, regional dispersal etc. This information will help the Government in formulation of policies for the development of the SSI Sector.
