Question : Threat to Indian Weightlifting Federation

(a) whether the Indian Weightlifting Federation faces the threat of suspension by the world body after two of its lifters tested positive
for performance enhancing drugs, if so, the details thereof and the response of the Government thereto;

(b) whether any enquiry is being conducted in this regard, if so, the details thereof;

(c) the corrective measures taken/being taken by the Government in this regard; and

(d) the steps being taken by the Government to completely eradicate the menace of doping in sports in the country?

(a) Madam, Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has informed that
there is no threat of suspension of the Indian Weightlifting
Federation by the World Body after two dope positive cases were
reported during the 2015 Commonwealth Championship at Pune in
October, 2015.

(b) The two Indian weightlifters tested positive for dope are serving
provisional suspension imposed by the International Weightlifting
Federation. An enquiry committee has been constituted by Indian
Weightlifting Federation to look into the matter.

(c)&(d) : Government has already set up the National Anti-Doping Agency
(NADA), which functions independently in accordance with rules
and regulations of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
NADA deals with matters relating to awareness about doping in
sports including dissemination of information, educating
sportspersons, coaches and support personnel on the ill effects of
doping through teaching sessions/seminars/workshops.
