Question : CONSUMPTION OF UREA



(a) : The consumption of urea in Uttranchal and Uttar Pradesh, district-wise;

(b) The extent to which this level of consumption is more or less in Uttranchal and Uttar Pradesh as compared to average national consumption; and

(c) The measures being taken to maintain the balance in this regard ?

(a): A statement showing the consumption of urea in various districts of Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh during 2002-2003 is given in Annexure.

(b): The per hectare consumption of urea in Uttar Pradesh including Uttaranchal, was 173.18 kg during 2002-03, which was more than one and half times the average national consumption of 98.89 kg during the same period.

(c): The Government is promoting Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), which advocates soil test based judicious and balanced use of chemical fertilizers in conjunction with organic manures and bio fertilizers to improve soil health and productivity. Financial assistance is also being provided for strengthening of soil testing laboratories and production of compost from city waste under the scheme `Balanced and Integrated Use of Fertilizers`, which has since been subsumed under the Macro Management Scheme. Besides, Government is also promoting organic fanning which emphasizes the use of organic sources of nutrients like farm yard manure, compost, green manure, vermi-compost and bio-fertilizers etc.
