Question : INCREASE IN IMPORT OF PESTICIDES



(a) Whether there is a continuous increase in the import of pesticides;

(b) If so, the reasons thereof;

(c) Whether the domestic industry has suffered due to import of pesticides;

(d) If so, the steps taken by the Government to reduce the import of pesticides;

(e) Whether the use of chemical pesticide has adversely affected the crop production in the country; and

(f) If so, the details in this regard?

(e)&(f) Chemical pesticides are registered under the Insecticides Act, 1968. If used as per the label claim, they do not pose any adverse effect. However, their abuse or misuse may lead to adverse effects. With a view to promote judicious use of chemical pesticides, the Government of India has adopted Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach for need based use of chemical pesticides to ensure sustainable system of crop protection and to maximize productivity with minimum possible adverse impact on the environment. Under IPM, training is imparted to the farmers, extension workers and master trainers for judicious use of the pesticides. .
