Question : NOMENCLATURE OF BOMBAY HIGH COURT



(a) whether the Government has received any proposal from the Government of Maharashtra regarding renaming of Bombay High Court as Mumbai High Court;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the present status of the said proposal; and

(d) the time by which the said proposal is likely to be finalised along with the reasons for delay?

(a) to (d): The Government of Maharashtra in 2008, conveyed no objection to the proposal for changing the name of `Bombay High Court` as the `Mumbai High Court1. The proposal has been considered together with similar cases pertaining to changing the names of High Courts of Madras and Calcutta. The process involves consultation with all the stake holders such as the concerned State Government and High Court. It also involves examination of legal and relevant constitutional provisions for changing the name of a High Court.
