Question : DENOTIFICATION OF TRIBES



(a) whether Thoti` and `Chodhra` tribes are being denotified;

(b) if so, the reasons for denotification;

(c) whether people in large numbers belonging to these two tribes reside in many districts of Maharashtra State;

(d) whether the Government propose to review its decision; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

THE MINISTER OF TRIBAL AFFAIRS (SHRI JUAL ORAM):

(a) to (e) The Govt. of Maharashtra, the Registrar General of India and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes have recommended the exclusion of the Thoti and Chodhra communities from the list of Scheduled Tribes of Maharashtra. According to 1991 Census data, the Chodhra community is mainly found in Greater Bombay and Thane districts whereas the Thoti community is mainly found in Nanded and Bir districts. There is no proposal to review the decision already taken in the matter.
