Question : Selling of Renewable Energy with Storage

(a) Whether the country would be able to sell renewable energy with proper storage
capacity and there would be demand for round-the-clock renewable energy even
at that rate to meet the actual requirements in the market; and
(b) If so, the details along with the present status thereof including the storage demand/actual utility of each State till now, State-wise?

Answer given by the minister

THE MINISTER OF NEW & RENEWABLE ENERGY AND POWER
(SHRI R.K. SINGH)
(a) & (b) Renewable energy resources are intermittent in nature and incorporation of energy storage will reduce grid-stability issues. Central Electricity Authority has assessed a requirement of 41 GW/190 GWh of Energy Storage System by 2030 for integration of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel based electricity into the grid.

Ministry of Power vide Order dated 22/07/2022, issued the Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) and Energy Storage Obligation (ESO) Trajectory till 2029-30, where the following percentage of total energy consumed shall be solar / wind energy along with / through storage:

Financial
Year Storage
(on Energy basis)
2023-24 1.0 %
2024-25 1.5 %
2025-26 2.0 %
2026-27 2.5 %
2027-28 3.0 %
2028-29 3.5 %
2029-30 4.0 %

The above Energy Storage Obligation shall be calculated in energy terms as a percentage of total consumption of electricity and shall be treated as fulfilled only when at least 85% of the total energy stored in the Energy Storage System on an annual basis is procured from renewable energy sources.
