Question : IMPORT OF FOODGRAINS



(a) the production and carry over stocks of paddy/rice and wheat during each of the last three years and the current year, Statewise;

(b) the storage capacity utilisation in the States including West Bengal during the said period, State-wise;

(c) whether foodgrains including wheat and rice were imported/exported during the said period; and

(d) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor indicating quantum and price of foodgrains imported/exported during the said period?

(a): A statement showing the production of wheat and rice during the last three years and the current year, state-wise is enclosed at Annexure-I. Statements showing the Actual stock of wheat and rice, which include the carry over stock, and the current procurement of wheat and rice, are enclosed as Annexure II to V.

(b): A statement showing the state-wise storage capacity utilization during the last three years and the current year is enclosed at Annexure -VI.

(c) & (d): The export of non-basmati rice and wheat from Central Pool stocks has been stopped w.e.f 11.8.2003. However, export on diplomatic basis is allowed to friendly countries from time to time. During the year 2009-10 and 2010-11, Government has allowed export of 2 lakh tonnes of wheat and 3 lakh tonnes of non-basmati parboiled rice to Bangladesh at concessional rate, 50,000 tonnes of wheat to Nepal at Economic Cost from the Central Pool and 2.5 lakh tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan as gift. There has been no import of wheat and rice on Government account in the last three years and in the current year.
