Question : Ranking of Universities

(a) whether it is true that Indian Universities/Colleges have been successful in finding place in the top twenty list of leading small universities;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government is taking any steps to develop other small universities/colleges to make them competitive an international level; and

(d) if so, the details and the outcome thereof?

(a) & (b): The Times Higher Education rankings has brought out the World Small University Rankings in 2016 naming therein Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (ranked 14) and Savitribai Phule Pune University (ranked 18) in the top 20.

(c) & (d): With a view to improving the competitiveness of the higher educational institutions, the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has been launched on September 29, 2015. The NIRF rankings are based on clearly verifiable objective criteria covering five broad parameters. The NIRF is expected to benchmark good performing institutions and would help others to understand their areas of strength and weakness and to take corrective action as necessary. The first India Rankings 2016 have been announced on 04.04.2016 and are available at https://www.nirfindia.org/Home .
