Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF THE STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF STEEL (SHRI A. SAI PRATHAP)

(a)&(b): Steel production capacity in the country, which was 33.58 million tonnes in the year 1999-2000 has increased to 72.96 million tonnes in 2009-10. The majority of this incremental capacity of 39.38 million tonnes has come either through expansion of existing units (brownfield) or through secondary sector units consisting of chain of Directly Reduced Iron (DRI), Induction Furnace, Re-rolling Mills, and Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) routes. However, statistics on the exact break-up of capacity addition through Greenfield and brownfield has not been compiled in the Ministry of Steel.

(c): The details of crude steel capacity in public sector during last three year, 2007-08 to 2009-10 is given below:-
