Question : Increase of Seats in Central University

(a) whether the Government is contemplating any proposal to increase seats in the
Central Universities and if so, the details thereof;
(b) whether the Government proposes to establish new colleges to accommodate the
increased quotas;
(c) if so, whether it also proposes to establish these colleges in Delhi as well; and
(d) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

(a): The Central Universities are autonomous institutions governed under the provisions of
their respective Acts, Statutes and Ordinances framed thereunder. The statutory bodies of the
Central Universities are competent to increase the number of seats keeping in view the
availability of physical infrastructure, faculty positions, financial resources, UGC’s consent
etc. In the wake of implementation of Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in
Admissions) Act, 2006, there has been sustained increase in the intake of total number of
students in the Central Universities and Colleges affiliated to University of Delhi and other
Central Universities.
(b) to (d): There is no proposal to establish new colleges by the Ministry of Human Resource
Development (MHRD). However, under RUSA scheme, the MHRD is part funding, interalia,
upgrading the existing colleges by the State Governments and Union Territories.
