Question : USE OF COMPUTERS IN GIC



(a) whether the General Insurance Corporation and its four subsidiaries have purchased computers in bulk for its offices throughout the country;

(b) if so, the number of computers purchased by GIC and each subsidiary company during the last three years and the total amount spent thereon, year wise;

(c) whether Gynesis system has been introduced in each subsidiary company;

(d) if so, the details threof and the total amount spent thereon by each subsidiary company;

(e) whether there are complaints of improper functioning of the system in several offices of the subsidiaries of GIC; and

(f) if so, the details threof and if not, its success rate?

a) GIC has informed that purchase of computers have been on need basis only, after duly satisfying requirfements and with prior approval of respective Boards of GIC and subsidiaries from time to time.

b) The details of purchase of computers during the last three years ending March, 2000 are :

c) Company wise status is given below:
National : Discussions are in progress on identifying applications gaps and extent of customisation needed. United : Signed agreement with CMC Ltd and is in process of implementation. Oriental : Not implemented so far, siscussions with CMC is in progress. New India : Introduced in 300 offices as of now.
d) Company wise status is given below:
National : Nil. United India : Paid Rs. 2.06 crores to M/s. CMC Ltd towards first instalment of Corporate Licence Fee and project implementation for 300 operating offices. Oriental : NIL New India : Rs. 10.45 crores on software licences and installation charges.



e) Gynesis system is placed only in one subsidiary i.e. New India Assurance Co and the operation of system is generally satisfactory though the software requires regular upgradation.

f) The New India Assurance Company where the system is operational has reported that there has been no major malfunctioning or complaint about the systems and its operation has been generally satisfactory so far.
