Question : Dues of Banks on Agriculture Sector

(a) whether at the end of 2016-17 the commercial banks had a due of approximately 9.6 lakh crore rupees on agriculture sector in the country;

(b) if so, the actual amount of debt due in this regard;

(c) whether any assessment regarding Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) out of the said amount has been made; and

(d) if so, the amount of NPAs of agriculture sector at the end of March, 2017 and the total number of accounts involved therein?

The Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance


(a) & (b): National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has reported that the agriculture credit outstanding in respect of commercial banks as on 31.03.2017 is Rs. 10,56,685.59 crore (provisional).
(c) & (d): As reported by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) the total outstanding Gross Non Performing Assets (GNPAs) for Agriculture & Allied Activities, in respect of Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs) as on March 31-2017 is Rs. 62,307 crore (provisional).
