(a): A target of 700 MW has been fixed for biomass power and bagasse cogeneration projects for the Tenth Five Year Plan.
(b), (c) & (d): An aggregate capacity of 450 MW has already been installed in nine States, and a capacity of 518 MW is under implementation in eight States. Biomass resource assessment studies are being undertaken in 23 States to identify potential sites for setting up further projects.
(e): In Tamil Nadu, a capacity of 106 MW has already been installed, and a capacity of 124 MW is under implementation. Biomass Resource Assessment Studies have been conducted in 45 talukas to estimate the potential and to identify suitable locations for setting up of biomass power projects in the State.
Central Financial Assistance is provided for setting up of biomass power and bagasse cogeneration projects in various States, including Tamil Nadu. Financial incentives are also provided for preparation of Detailed Project Reports, awareness creation and training. Fiscal incentives including accelerated depreciation and relief from taxes, and duties, are also being provided. Soft loans are available from Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA). State policies have also been announced for providing grid connectivity and purchase of electricity from these projects.
