Question : Supply of Safe Drinking Water in Remote Areas

(a) whether the Government is aware of the fact that safe drinking water is still not available in many remote areas of the country;
(b) if so, whether the Government has identified those areas; and
(c) the details of the action plan for provision of safe drinking water to every village in the country?

(a) & (b) As reported by States/ UTs, as on 19.03.2021, with sources at a reasonable distance, 79.30% rural habitations having 78.26% population have provision of minimum 40 litre per capita per day (lpcd) of potable drinking water and 17.87% rural habitations having 19.26% population have service level of less than 40 lpcd potable water. However, 2.83% rural habitations having 2.48% of the rural population are reported to have water quality issues in ground water sources.
(c) To enable every rural household to have assured supply of potable tap water at a service level of 55 litre per capita per day (lpcd) by 2024, Government of India, in partnership with States, is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal. The estimated outlay for the Mission is Rs. 3.60 lakh Crore, out of which Central share is Rs. 2.08 lakh Crore. As per action plan finalized by every State/ UT, every households in all villages are to be provided with functional tap water connection by 2024.
