Question : UPGRADATION OF SPORTS AUTHORITY OF INDIA CENTRE OF ALLEPPEY



(a) whether Government are aware of the need to upgrade the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre of Alleppey in Kerala as Centre of Excellence for water sports; and

(b) if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b): Yes Sir. The SAI Special Area Games Centre at Alleppy caters to the needs of training of talented youngsters and elite sports persons on systematic and scientific lines in various Water Sports disciplines such as Canoeing, Kayaking & Rowing. The scheme of Centre of Excellence as of now is operated from Regional Centres /Sub-Centres of SAI where all modern facilities for particular sports in which the Centre is to be run are available alongwith the scientific back up. The SAI Centre at Alleppy is under the SAG Scheme, which is opened with a view to scout and nurture talent for modern competitive games and sports from tribal, rural and coastal areas of the country,

The Centre is upgraded from time to time with reference to the procurement of boats/training equipment etc. A new 75 bedded Hostel with dining, kitchen facilities and conditioning hall for the trainees of the SAG Centre is being constructed and is nearing completion at Alleppy.
