Question : Surveillance to Check Cross Border Smuggling

(a) whether the Narcotics Control Bureau has strengthened the Surveillance Department at the Wagah Border to trap the illicit trade of narcotics hidden in spices and other goods which made drugs untraceable;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether new equipment have been provided to the surveillance forces at the border to identify the illicit trade of narcotics; and

(d) if so, the details of such equipment and the number of cases that have been detected using this equipment?

(a) to (d) The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has a robust mechanism of surveillance and works in close coordination with intelligence agencies, border guarding forces and state police to curb drug trafficking. For better coordination and information sharing among various Central and State Agencies and the border guarding forces, the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) mechanism and the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) with DG, NCB as its Chairman serve as institutional mechanisms. In addition, the

country’s international borders, including Wagah border, have been strengthened with the provisioning of Surveillance Devices, Night Vision Devices, Jammers, Mine Detectors, Trail Cameras etc. The border guarding forces have an effective mechanism for surveillance at the borders and are equipped with latest gadgets and equipments. The details of State/UT-wise cases registered and drugs seized during 2017-2019 under Narcotics Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 are annexed.
