MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS (SHRI KIREN RIJIJU)

(a) to (d): Reports have been received from various States/Union Territories and investigation agencies about continued activities of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) which are prejudicial to the integrity and security of the State and have the potential of disturbing peace and communal harmony and disrupting the secular fabric of the country.

During the last three years, several FIRs are reported to have been registered against ex-SIMI cadres in the States of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The ‘Public Order’ and ‘Police’ are the State Subjects. The primary responsibility to maintain Public Order and Peace including checking of the overt and covert activities of SIMI rests with the State Governments.

The Central Government has since declared SIMI as an unlawful association under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 on 1st February, 2014 for a period of five years. Earlier, it was banned in 2001, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2010 & 2012.
