Question : Attack on Journalists

(a) Whether the incidents of attack on journalists in the country has grown up in recent times;
(b) If so, the number of such incidents reported in the country during the last five years;
(c) The action taken by the respective State Governments and the support extended to the families of the victims; and
(d) The present status and implementation of Majithia Wage Board Notification by the Media Organisation thereof, State-wise ?

(a) to (c): State/UT-wise cases registered and persons arrested under attack on media persons (under section 325,326, 326A and 326B of IPC) during 2014-2016 is enclosed at Annexure-A as National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) has started maintaining data in this regard since 2014 only. This data of NCRB reveals that there is a substantial decrease in number of cases of attack on journalists from 114 in 2014 to 47 in 2016.
Police and Public Order are State subjects under Seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India. The responsibilities to maintain law and order, protection of life and property rest primarily with the respective State Government.
(d): Statement showing state-wise present status and implementation of Majithia Wage Board Notification by the Newspaper Establishments, is annexed as Annexure-B
